Pinterest is introducing nine pronoun options for users to self-select for display on their profiles.
The pronouns are Ey/Em, He/Him, Ne/Nem, She/Her, They/Them, Ve/Ver, Xe/Xem, Xie/Xem, Ze/Zir, and will be available for both personal and business accounts on the American image-sharing platform.
Gender-neutral pronouns such as ze/zir and xie/xem are used by some people – for example, those who are nonbinary, genderqueer, genderfluid, and gender non-conforming- who may not comfortable using they/them.
Instagram revealed a similar functionality on its platform last month.
“We want Pinterest to be a positive and inspiring place on the internet”
Sean Doyle, Experiential Lead EMEA and Co-lead of Pinwheels EMEA, Pinterest’s LGBTQ+ Employee representation group, today told Attitude: “We’re proud to be introducing nine personal pronouns, so that Pinners can self-identify and express their most authentic selves. We want Pinterest to be a positive and inspiring place on the internet and we hope that this feature will continue to ensure an inclusive experience for everyone.
“After a difficult year, it’s great to see so many people turning to Pinterest, to embrace their differences. We’ve seen the LGBTQ+ community seek to proudly celebrate with searches for ‘bisexual pride flag’ and ‘genderfluid flag’ up by 5x and 4.5x respectively. And it’s interesting that Gen Z in particular are exploring their identity and sexuality, following a period of reflection – causing searches for ‘omnisexual’ to increase 8.5x.”
Indeed, as part of its ‘Show Your True Colours’ pride campaign, Pinterest has shared a range of LGBTQ-related data to mark Pride month.
The data shows that amongst Gen Z, searches for ‘omnisexual’ have multiplied by 8.5x, and ‘abrosexual’ (someone who experiences changes in their sexual orientation over time) by 3x.
Meanwhile, searches for “coming out party” are up by 67%; “coming out photoshoot” by 44%; “bisexual pride flag” have multiplied by 5x and “genderfluid flag” by 4.5x.
This Pride, Pinterest will also be donating funds to the following LGBTQ+ organisations: BLAQ, Immigration Equality, and the UK nonprofit supporting trans and gender-diverse youth, Mermaids.
