Dog owner? Here’s how to make moving stress-free
Supported by Outlet Property Services
Most dog owners in London will move house at least once in their dog’s lives, and to make it as straightforward and stress-free as possible for both you and your best friend, there are a few things to bear in mind. Firstly, if you’re renting, make sure that your new landlord will allow you to bring your dog. Never be tempted to not tell them – you’ll likely be breaching your tenancy agreement, and they’re bound to find out sooner or later.
If you’re still in the process of finding somewhere and are having difficulties, take a look at Outlet’s current pet-friendly properties on its website. If you’re ready to move and you have your pet-friendly property lined up, or are buying your own home, here’s how you can make the move – pooch and all!
Park the pup
Consider sending your dog off to a friend or relative you trust. You have your hand full with packing, and your dog will certainly sense the disruption in the air and become unsettled, if not actually get in the way. Alternatively, you may want to consider putting them in a kennel, or seeing if your dog walker can look after them for a day or two.
Hide the pup
If your dog does stay with you, it’s best to shut them in one room on the day of the move or keep them on a lead. This is less disruptive all round, and also minimises the risk of them wandering at a time when the front door is likely to be open for a long time.
Keep an eye on the pup
If you’re moving with others, designate one person to be in charge of looking after the dog. They’ll probably be glad if it means they do less heavy lifting. If you don’t assign the task to someone, you’ll end up with different people thinking they’re responsible – and a dog that’s disappeared to the park.
Welcome the pup
In your new home, help your dog to feel familiar by showing them round. Give them water, food and somewhere to lie down as soon as possible. As with your old property, keep them confined on the day of the move to avoid disruption or worries about wandering off.
To help them settle in, take them for frequent short walks. They’ll soon get to recognise their new surroundings – and all those lovely new smells around the place. Your dog should soon be enjoying their new home, but just be aware that it can take a few days.
