Malaga has become a nightlife hotspot, and within that has been a growing LGBTQ+ scene. Malaga itself is a very cosmopolitan city, attracting a broad range of tourists from around the world, as well as Spaniards moving there. However, though Malaga itself has a booming nightlife, a smaller town adjacent to it may be just what you’re looking for, if what you’re looking for is gay bars!
Why Malaga and Torremolinos Are Top LGBTQ+ Destinations
A welcoming and vibrant LGBTQ+ scene
Malaga, and in particular its nearby coastal town Torremolinos, has become known among LGBTQ+ travelers for being a tolerant and friendly place. There is a lot of youthful diversity around the town, in part thanks to its local university, and this has seeped into its nightlife.
Torremolinos: Spain’s iconic gay-friendly town
Just a short 12km from Malaga is Torremolinos. The heart of its gay scene is in the La Nogalera district, which has dozens of bars and clubs catering to the LGBTQ+ community – and many other clubs that are equally as friendly. What began as a counterculture movement has now become, thankfully, the norm, much like Brighton in the UK.
The Best Gay Bars in Malaga City
Popular spots for cocktails and dance
Malaga is a very exciting city to be in, and although it doesn’t have quite the same emphasis on LGBTQ+ as Torremolinos, there are still many bars to choose from. Renard Cocktail Club is a good option, as it sits near Plaza de la Constitución and has a good selection of cocktails in a stylish setting. For those looking to dance, Theatro Club has some great music until the early hours, along with regular drag performances.
Hidden gems for a relaxed atmosphere
Perhaps you have to be up in the morning early and are looking for a more laid-back evening, Baires coffee & drinks could be a good option for being laid-back and essentially open whenever it’s needed. Bar Los Pueblos is great for eating in too, while Casa Lola is perhaps the most notable bistro in the city. Another local option is Bottega, which is a cosy wine bar with a good selection of regional vintages and tapas.
Torremolinos: The LGBTQ+ Capital of the Costa del Sol
Must-visit gay bars and clubs
Torremolinos may be smaller than Malaga city, but it well and truly comes alive at night. Venues like EDEN is popular gay bar, with many live acts, while Parthenon offers a more traditional Spanish club experience (it’s still a gay bar, so think flamenco-inspired drag shows and pop anthems). Both venues are within walking distance of each other, so you may want to try both in the same night.
Beach bars and daytime hotspots
During the day, you may be better off heading to the beach, as this is where you will find people sipping beer and cocktails in places like the Eden Beach Club and Moma Beach Club. Here, you can have light meals while listening to some music, and potentially a DJ on weekends.
How to Get Around: Exploring Beyond the City
Public transport vs. renting a car
Public transportation links between Malaga and Torremolinos are pretty good, as there is a C1 train line with a journey of around 20 minutes. However, exploring the Costal del Sol region more broadly is much easier done via car. So, for a daytime outing, you could drive, but when planning on drinking at night, a taxi is also possible.
The benefits of hiring a car at Malaga Airport
A car hire Malaga Airport is what will be the most convenient and fastest way to head into town. It’s around a 20 minute drive into the city center, and over double that via public transport. But, the true benefit comes from being able to take more luggage and having the freedom to take a detour to some scenic spots.
Final Tips for Enjoying the Malaga Gay Scene
Best times of the year to visit
The south of Spain has good weather all year round. If you’re looking for a tan though, winter may be a bit cloudy. Easter and Autumn are perhaps the best weather for drinking in the LGBTQ+ beach bars, as you will be in less danger of overheating. Though, mid-summer can be a great atmosphere, and the many umbrellas help prevent burning. A car hire from CarGest is a good option in summer as you can venture out to more secluded spots.
Safety and local LGBTQ+ events
Spain is one of the most LGBTQ-friendly countries in the entire world. And, areas like this in the Costa del Sol region are the pinnacle of these attitudes, with their young and tolerant demographics. Check local LGBTQ+ publications like “Masgay” for current event listings, as well as Facebook groups.
