It’s well and truly time to turn the spotlight onto one of the most resilient and overlooked communities: older LGBTQ+ people. James Linnington, a Senior Recruitment Marketing Specialist at clinical research organisation Parexel, sat down to share insightful reflections from his professional journey, and his thoughts on how we can better support older members of the community. Throughout his two-decade career in marketing and communications, including 11 years at Parexel, James has garnered many learnings. Among these is the pressing need to consider the unique requirements of older LGBTQ+ people, especially regarding healthcare and workplace inclusivity.

Conversations on the issues facing the LGBTQ+ community continue to develop, but James notes a critical component of these discussions tends to be missing – the complex interplay of ageism and homophobia. Rather than prioritising representation, the stories of older LGBTQ+ people have been defined by the weight of concealment. This has historically been a common experience for this demographic, often resulting in diminished confidence and difficulties with career growth.

James expresses his belief that it is essential that workplace policies are well-informed by the historical, and ongoing, challenges this demographic faces. Workplaces must pivot towards inclusive benefits that cater specifically to the healthcare and retirement planning requirements of older LGBTQ+ professionals.

Access to healthcare presents a significant barrier for aging LGBTQ+ people. Discrimination within healthcare settings leaves many feeling isolated and without the necessary support systems.

“Many may have experienced trauma related to their identity, leading to distrust in the healthcare system,” James explains. “LGTBQ+ health access has changed since the AIDS pandemic, and getting blood tests and general health screenings is now less stigmatised and perhaps as accepted as going for a standard vaccination or a visit to the GP.”

James remarks upon the topic of mental health, which remains a pressing topic for older LGBTQ+ people. Many in this demographic contend with mental health issues as a result of the loss of friends and partners during the height of the AIDS crisis, and continued social stigma throughout their lives. Despite advancements in social acceptance and healthcare, James reflects on persisting generational trauma.

“I can see times have changed massively since I came out in the late 90’s but I still see that generational trauma also plays a role,” he notes. “It is essential to support them through targeted mental health services, peer support groups, and community outreach programs that foster connection and understanding.” James advocates for a healthcare system with an integrated approach that aligns with the lived realities of older LGBTQ+ people, encompassing both physical healthcare and mental health support. He passionately believes healthcare – and wider society – should be inclusive for everyone, regardless of who they are or who they love. “Society can improve the lives of older LGBTQ+ individuals by promoting awareness and understanding of their specific challenges. Education is key – training for service providers and awareness campaigns can help create a more accepting environment.”

Reflecting on his personal and professional pathway, James observes a notable evolution in workplace attitudes toward the LGBTQ+ community. “When I first started my career, there was a certain caution about being openly gay in the workplace,” he recalls. Although James notes that there is work still to be done, he is glad that progressive companies such as Parexel prioritise inclusivity and provide health plans that accommodate employees unique needs.

Perhaps the most compelling takeaway from this discussion is the inspiring resilience of older members within the LGBTQ+ community. Their rich experiences and contributions have significantly shaped the fabric of the workplaces and wider society we witness today.

“By listening to them and learning from their journeys, we can create a more inclusive future that honors their past while ensuring they are cared for and respected in the present.”
