India Willoughby has slammed the Labour government, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Health Secretary Wes Streeting over the party’s policies regarding the ban on hormone blockers and their stance on trans healthcare.

Speaking to Attitude on the red carpet at the Virgin Atlantic Attitude Awards, powered by Jaguar, Willoughby said: “I’m not exaggerating when I say that the Labour government are going to be responsible for the deaths of hundreds, possibly thousands, of trans people.”

The former Celebrity Big Brother contestant, who in 2016 became the UK’s first trans newsreader, arrived on the red carpet in a red dress with the words “Labour is killing trans people” written on her arms.

“We are going through a very slow and quiet genocide,” she said. Everyone thinks that a genocide is all about death camps. Not necessarily.”

She continued: “You’re stopping people transitioning. This is going to lead to suicides. Every study in the world has shown this leads to suicides. But Wes Streeting just does not care. I think it’s an absolute disgrace.”

Earlier this year, Willoughby wrote an op-ed for Attitude about the Labour government in which she also criticised Labour and the controversial Cass Review.

When asked by Attitude tonight (9 October) if she had anything she might add to that article, she said: “My message to the Labour government is: if there’s anyone in the party that’s still left of centre, please stage a coup. Keir Starmer is not good news for the LGBTQ+ community. We need drastic action.”

The 59-year-old went on to describe the current climate for trans people as “our Cabaret years”, a reference to the musical set during the rise of the fascist Nazi party in Germany.

“Labour are not doing anything,” she said. “The Conservative Party and Reform are waiting in the wings, and they are going to decimate the trans community.”
