Rebel Wilson on journalist’s attempt to out her: ‘Not ideal’
"I didn’t think it was that big of a deal and that we should kind of be forced to make an announcement about it. But that happened."
Rebel Wilson has opened up about coming out publicly after a tabloid journalist “threatened” to out her.
In June the Sydney Morning Herald’s Andrew Hornery contacted Rebel about her relationship with fashion designer Ramona Agruma.
Realising she was about to be outed Rebel posted a picture of the pair on her Instagram.
The caption read: “I thought I was searching for a Disney Prince… but maybe what I really needed all this time was a Disney Princess.”
Since then Hornery has apologised and admitted to “mishandled steps in our approach”.
Speaking to The Australian, Rebel says she wasn’t hiding the relationship with Ramona.
“But coming out in a same-sex relationship, there are levels to telling people. You tell your close family and your friends and not everybody.”
She also reveals that in both her and Ramona’s families there are people who aren’t as accepting as they’d like.
“We were trying to be respectful to those people and tell them in our own way. Basically, with the situation where a journalist is threatening to out you, you’ve got to hurry and some people we didn’t get a chance to tell before it came out publicly. And that’s not ideal,” she continues.
Rebel shares that is was a hard few days for both her and Ramona.
“In 2022, love is love. I didn’t think it was that big of a deal and that we should kind of be forced to make an announcement about it. But that happened.”
Speaking of her latest film, The Almond and the Seahorse, in which Rebel has her first on-screen kiss with a woman Rebel tells The Australian she was nervous to be working opposite Charlotte Gainsbourg.
“But Charlotte is so professional and great to work with and it was good. Obviously, it’s never very romantic kissing anybody on set, but it was definitely a cool experience.”
The Almond and the Seahorse focuses on Sarah (Wilson) and Toni (Gainsbourg), whose partners both suffer from traumatic brain injuries.
