47% of Americans have said that it was “inappropriate” for Michael Sam and his boyfriend’s gay kiss to be screened on television, according to a new survey.
Earlier this month, the NFL star was seen kissing his boyfriend, Vito Cammisano, after he was told over the phone that the St. Louis Rams had selected him for their team.
However, the footage has caused some controversy in the US.
According to The Huffington Post, only 36% of Americans said that it was “appropriate” for ESPN to air the footage, in comparison to the 47% who found it “inappropriate”.
According to statistics, 60% of Americans said they would be strongly support their team signing a gay player, whereas 20% said they would object.
However, the reaction to Sam’s gay kiss shows that Americans are less comfortable with the reality of gay players. It is common for networks to show straight players embracing their wives and girlfriends during celebrations.
Sam’s selection makes him only the second out gay athlete to compete in any of North America’s four major professional sports leagues – football, baseball, basketball and hockey – after basketball player Jason Collins was selected for the NBA earlier this year.
