Nicky Morgan, the anti-gay marriage MP who was recently promoted to Education Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities, has hired a Stonewall campaigner to her team.

Luke Tryl, who served as the head of education at the LGB charity, will be Morgan’s special advisor, after she was promoted during David Cameron’s cabinet reshuffle.

Tryl has undertaken extensive work to combat homophobia in schools in his work with Stonewall.

Morgan’s promotion has been criticised as many believe her opposition to gay marriage makes her an inappropriate candidate for a role.

She has served as Minister for Women since April, when former Minister for Women and Equalities Maria Miller resigned following a row over expenses. Downing Street confirmed that equalities had been added to her ministerial portfolio on July 15.

Speaking about her opposition of same-sex marriage last year, Morgan said: “I totally support civil partnerships and that same-sex relationships are recognised in law. But marriage, to me, is between a man and a woman.”
