Attitude is heading to London’s ‘Being a Man’ Festival
By Will Stroude
After a thought-provoking launch last year, Southbank Centre’s BAM: Being a Man festival returns at the end of the month (November 27-29) to explore the challenges and pressures of masculine identity in the 21st century – and a few familiar faces from Attitude will be helping proceedings along this year.
Taking place a week after International Men’s Day (November 19), the festival will feature a 3-day programme of talks & debates, concerts, performances, comedy and workshops with contributions from over 150 speakers and performers, including Akala, Frankie Boyle, David Baddiel, Kellie Maloney and Marlon James.
You can check out the weekend’s full list of exciting events over here, but here’s a brief summary of the things that Attitude will have a hand in – hope to see you there!
Men and Ageing – Matthew Todd, Editor of Attitude magazine
Being a Black Man – Jemal Polson, Attitude magazine columnist
Shades of Grey: male sexuality and identity – Cliff Joannou, Deputy Editor at Attitude magazine
Buffing Up: Men and Body Image – Cliff Joannou, Deputy Editor at Attitude magazine
Being a Gay Man – chaired by Wayne Dhesi, Attitude magazine columnist and R U Coming Out founder, with panelists including Matthew Todd
All In The Mind – Dr Christian Jessen
“Men are often under pressure to demonstrate heroism, be daring and ‘man up’, said Jude Kelly, Artistic Director of Southbank Centre. “BAM – Being a Man investigates what conflicts the modern man faces in a world where everything is changing: work, family, image and gender balance.
“It’s an opportunity, amidst all the debate about men, for men themselves to come together to share stories, discuss the pleasures and challenges of being men, and look at what kind of world they want for themselves and others.”
Being A Man festival runs Friday 27 – Sunday 29 November at London’s Southbank Centre. For tickets head to southbankcentre.co.uk/bam or call 0844 847 9944.
