Australian PM bombarded with same-sex wedding invites

By Attitude Magazine

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott won’t have too many spare weekends from now on if same-sex couples have anything to do with it.

As Australian Parliament resumes for its spring sitting, among a number of legislative bills scheduled to be heard this month before the House of Representatives are proposed changes to same-sex marriage laws.

As reported by Pink News, the opposition Labor party has allowed its MPs a conscience vote on the issue and now Abbott, a strong opponent to marriage equality, is under pressure to do the same for his Coalition MPs – and many have indicated they would support such a bill.

To help things along, patient couples waiting for their chance to marry alongside their heterosexual brothers and sisters have been sending wedding invites to Abbott in advance through the help of website InviteTony.

Supported by Australian law firm Maurice Blackburn, who “believe everyone has the right to equal treatment under the law”, InviteTony helps couples write to the PM with personalised invitations sent in the form of a “Save the Date” card.

Almost 70 wedding dates have already been scheduled through the platform, with 587 guests confirming their attendance to the nuptial celebrations.

It was reported last week that Abbott was canvassing party room opinion to hold a referendum on the issue after the 2016 election, which would delay marriage equality reforms for a number of years.
