Barack Obama “proud” of Robbie Rogers for coming out

Barack Obama has described openly gay football player Robbie Rogers as a “trailblazer”.
Rogers came out in February 2013 to coincide with his retirement from professional football, but after an overwhelmingly positive response he returned to the game later that year, signing with US team LA Galaxy.
During a speech at the White House this week, Obama said he is “proud” of Rogers for inspiring people all around the world with his coming out story.
“I want to recognise what Robbie Rogers of the Galaxy has done for a lot of people by blazing a trail as one of professional sports’ first openly gay players,” said the President.
“My guess is that as an athlete Robbie wants to win first and foremost, that’s what competition is all about. But Robbie, you’ve also inspired a whole lot of folks here and around the world, and we are very proud of you,” he added.
