‘Big Brother’ housemates discuss gay marriage
By Nick Levine
Three of the Big Brother: Power Trip housemates have a discussion about gay marriage on the show tonight (June 8).
The topic comes up when 23-year-old Kimberly Kisselovich, a Playboy bunny with a Law degree from California, recalls being shocked by an anti-gay sermon at a church service she once attended.
“I went to church with my sister, close to my house,” she recalls. “We have a lot of friends who are gay and we walked in there and they were absolutely slating gay people, [saying] they’re in hell and all this sort of stuff.
“And I just walked out,” Kimberly continues. “How could someone be so horrible… I find it so crazy.”
Danielle McMahon, a 25-year-old lingerie model and devout Catholic from Glasgow, who spoke out against gay marriage before entering the house, responds to Kimberly’s story.
“That’s too much. I don’t agree with that,” she says. “I’m not in favour of same-sex marriage but I’d never turn around and say, you’re going to hell… God still loves you regardless. I just don’t agree with it in the church of God.”
Marlon Wallen, 22, from Croydon, then pitches in with his opinion, saying: “I think, if you want to get married, get married to who the hell you want to get married to. It’s as simple as that.”
Danielle proceeds to try to clarify her stance on gay marriage. “Yeah… Civil Ceremonies and all that… [but] the Catholic church don’t believe in same-sex marriage in the church and I go by what the Pope says, do you know what I mean? I’ve not got a problem with same-sex marriage,” she explains.
Kimberly counters: “The whole thing, though, is that marriage has to do with the government and it’s a piece of paper. That’s a certificate and they don’t have to be married in the Catholic Church.”
Maintaining her stance, Danielle replies: “The only point I see in marriage is through God in the Catholic Church…or else, to me, it’s not marriage really.”
Watch the housemates discuss same-sex marriage on Big Brother: Power Trip tonight (June 8) at 9pm on Channel 5.
