Bill Maher on Kim Davis: She’s ‘the Rosa Parks of homophobia’

By Shaun Kitchener

Comedian and chatshow host Bill Maher went to town on Kim Davis on his chatshow on Friday (September 11), laughing off her refusal to issue same-sex marriage licenses and the Republican support around her.

Davis was briefly jailed for contempt of court after point-blank refusing to do her job, and was released this week to the tune of Survivor’s Eye Of The Tiger (who, incidentally, slammed her for using the track without permission).

Calling her the “Rosa Parks of homophobia”, Maher said: “[Davis and her supporters] all got out there and said, ‘God’s law supersedes the courts’, which actually is a very strong legal argument—in Saudi Arabia, but not here in America.

“I don’t want to say that the super religious types are always hypocrites but here she is. Standing up for traditional marriage and then we find out she’s had multiple affairs, conceived twins out of wedlock, and has been married four times! That’s why she can’t give marriage licenses to the gays—she used them all for herself!”

Linda Chavez of the Center for Equal Opportunity suggested that religious conservatives need “more time” to get used to the idea of same-sex marriages, a notion laughed off by the rest of the panel, before author Salman Rushdie said: “While they are denying people their rights, they claim their rights are being denied. While they are persecuting people, they claim to be persecuted. While they’re behaving colossally offensively, they claim to be the offended party.”

Maher agreed: “Especially Christians. I mean, the whole thing is based on a persecution complex. So when they say things like they’re criminalising Christianity—really? You’re 70 percent of the population.”
