Campaign launched for LGBT people with dementia
By Josh Haggis
The Alzheimer’s Society has launched a campaign to raise awareness of the disease amongst the LGBT community.
The campaign is based around an advice leaflet called “Dementia doesn’t discriminate”, which is available to read now on the Equity Trust Partnership website.
Cathy Henwood of the Alzheimer’s Society said in a statement: “Research has shown that older LGBT people are statistically more likely to live on their own and can become isolated in their communities.
“Coupled with this, many older LGBT people worry about ‘coming out’ to service providers so they can find it difficult to access the sort of support services that are available if they are concerned about dementia or need help to live well with the condition,”
The campaign will be launched officially with an event in Bradford tonight (March 20). Alzheimer’s Society research shows that 800,000 people in the UK have a form of dementia – and more than half of those have Alzheimer’s disease. Research also shows that one in three people over 65 will develop dementia.
