Catholic Church unwilling to make changes to ‘offensive’ school marriage booklet
After a woman took the Catholic Church to an anti-discrimination tribunal for publishing an anti same-sex marriage booklet called ‘Don’t mess with marriage’, the Church has ignored her efforts to make the booklet more respectful.
The booklet was distributed to Catholic schools across Australia and outlines the Church’s opposition to same-sex marriage and parenting.
Martine Delaney then submitted a complaint over the booklet last September, as she believed it was “insulting, offensive and humiliating” to gay people.
However, due to the cost of tribunal hearings and, according to BuzzFeed, her fear that “traditional marriage activists would continue to cite the case as evidence their voices were being shut down”.
Delaney then submitted a revised version of the entire booklet – changes she has made can be seen in red.
Delaney says her aim is to make sure people know that the booklet is based in belief, not fact.
“The Catholic Church has quite resolutely refused to changed anything they’ve done,” she told BuzzFeed News. “They don’t want to look, and say ‘We should deal with that, because we’ve hurt people’.”
The Church has not accepted the proposed changed and has offered a counter proposal, in which both parties would state their regret that people had “misinterpreted” their intentions.
