Country radio stations in the US pull track over ‘gay agenda’
By Josh Haggis
Country radio stations across the US are pulling a song off the airwaves because of its alleged “gay agenda”.
Little Big Town’s latest single Girl Crush has caused controversy because of its sexually-charged lyrics that some have wrongly misconstrued as being gay-themed. One radio host told The Washington Post that she has received a slew of angry calls, texts and emails from listeners who have threatened to boycott the station if they don’t ban the song.
The song, a heartbreaking ballad about a woman desperate to win her ex back, includes the lyrics:
“I want to taste her lips/ Yeah, ’cause they taste like you/ I want to drown myself/ In a bottle of her perfume/ I want her long blonde hair/ I want her magic touch/ Yeah, ’cause maybe then/ You’d want me just as much/ I got a girl crush.”
In an interview last week concerning the backlash, the band explained that despite the song not having anything to do with same-sex relationships, it “shouldn’t even matter” if it did.
“Just the fact that we’re still discussing that, number one, there’s so many problems with that whole issue,” the band told radio host Bobby Jones. “It shouldn’t even matter if it’s a lesbian song, is the first thing,” Bones added.
