David Cameron tells Attitude: 'Clare Balding is my gay hero'

David Cameron has named TV presenter Clare Balding as his LGBT hero in a new interview with Attitude.

Asked which LGBT person he most admired in the new issue, the Prime Minister says that while World War Two code breaker Alan Turing was also an “amazing man”, he’s a “big fan” of the 44-year-old sports broadcaster.

“Everyone says Alan Turing, and of course he was an a amazing man and I’ve seen The Imitation Game and I thought it was brilliant, but I’m going to go with Clare Balding,” Cameron says.

“I’m a big fan. I love her enthusiasm; her zest for life.” He goes on to say, “it doesn’t matter what sport she’s talking about, she can make it interesting. She’s a wonderful human being.”

The Prime Minister also admits that his wife Samantha – who famously enjoys the music of Azealia Banks – has got him into listening to US indie band The War On Drugs. “I can recommend it,” he says. “They’re a band, you can find them on Spotify or iTunes – anyway, they’re good!”

The Prime Minister makes his case to the LGBT community ahead of the general election in a broad ranging interview, in which he also reveals that he raised the issue of LGBT rights in a late night meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and explains why he doesn’t feel an Labour’s plan for an LGBT rights envoy is the best way to promote tolerance internationally.
