Do gay men watch too much porn?

By Josh Haggis

A gay men’s discussion group in London is set to pose the ultimate question at its next monthly meeting: “Do gay men watch too much porn?”

Launched in 2014 by trainee dramatherapist Simon Marks, A Change of Scene invites gay men to come together free of charge and discuss topical and hard-hitting issues that directly affect the gay community on a daily basis.

Gay Porn

Marks told attitude.co.uk that he chose gay porn as the group’s latest topic because it’s something that we all engage in, “but never really talk about” with each other.

“I certainly don’t think our consumption of porn is any more or less than straight men, but after one of our events last year, I spoke to one guy who suggested that we might be more exposed to commercial, over-sexualised gay imagery, because the scene is a lot smaller and more concentrated in one place, so it’s more in your face,” said Marks.

“He said walking around Soho, he felt like he could’t get away from underwear, club flyers, models, bare torsos and naked men. I thought that was a really interesting point, and I wanted to examine it further with the rest of the group to see what others thought,” he added.

A Change of Scene runs every second Tuesday of the month. “Too Much Porn?” will take place on 10 February, 6.30pm, 56 Dean Street, London. Click here to find out more about the group on their Facebook page.
