Blue singer Duncan James has shared his views on the LGBT situation abroad, saying that UK-based gay people are “very lucky” in comparison.

James, who came out as bisexual in 2009, opened up to reporters at a charity event for Shelter in London earlier today (March 4).

James said, according to our friends at Digital Spy: “We live in 2014. We should be able to celebrate who we are as people without having to feel frightened or scared. I think it’s really important, especially in this country, that there’s so much more awareness and people are more educated.

“[In] Russia [the LGBT community] is having a terrible time at the minute. It’s quite scary when you think about the stuff that happens in our world that we live in right now. We’re very lucky living in the UK, I guess.”

Speaking about his own experience getting to grips with his sexuality, James added: “I’m very lucky to have gone through what I’ve gone through publicly, and hopefully I can give help to people and let them know that actually there’s nothing wrong in being who you are.”

Last month (February) James spoke candidly about his coming out experience, admitting: “I feared the prospect of being rejected by my own family, friends and fan-base when I came out.”
