Lawyers for the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron, Brigitte Macron, have confirmed she is suing those spreading a ‘conspiracy theory’ that she is a transgender woman.
A rumour that Mrs. Macron, 68, was born Jean-Michel Trogneux appeared on social media earlier this year but gathered pace over recent months after being shared and discussed on other platforms. Trogneux was her maiden name.
These rumours appear to have been traced to a far-right publication, Faits et documents, and a writer called Natacha Rey, who published the article in September.
“It is in progress”
Jean Ennochi, Mrs. Macron’s lawyer confirmed to the AFP news agency this week “She [Brigitte] has decided to initiate proceedings, it is in progress,” according to the BBC.
The Independent reports that the publication Le Figaro is the one that is being sued.
The fake news has largely been spread by accounts that oppose the head of state, anti-vaxxers, and known conspiracy theorists. The theory has appeared months ahead of the next French presidential election, which is due to take place in April.
During the 2017 presidential campaign, Emmanuel Macron faced allegations that he is gay. The couple has also faced abuse online as a result of the 25 year age gap between them.
Mrs Macron is the mother of three adult children from her first marriage.
