Everybody Wants Some!! director reveals the film has gay subtext

By Fabio Crispim

Everybody Wants Some!!

director Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused and Boyhood) has said that there is intentional gay subtext in the film.

Gay Star News reports that the upcoming 80s film has lingers on shots of male actors dressed in tight-fitting clothes, reminiscing of the way women were frequently objectified and says that the shots were intentional.

Linklater spoke to Vulture.com and said, “I think there are some early shots, like when we’re driving with Jake’s [Blake Jenner] character, it’s all male gaze.”

“It goes back to ancient Greece. Those early Olympics were performed in the nude,” he said.

When asked how he felt about other men appreciating the shots Linklater said, “It’s cool that gay men like our movie a lot.”

He reveals how he was inspired by his mentor, George Morris, who died of AIDS in 1989.

Linklater said that Morris “could find the gay subtext or the gay view i anything, and he would let me see that.”

“So he opened up a world to me that I hadn’t known, and that I was lucky to be privy to, but I’ve never forgotten. Still, to this day, I look at films and go, ‘Oh, George is going to love this.’ I always felt like George would like these guys in this film, because it’s in there. It kind of speaks for itself.”

Linklater says he finds it funny that fans thought the film was “inadvertently gay, as if it were made by a frat boy who has no idea.”

“I’ve been around a long time. Not inadvertent.”

There’s also a homoerotic theme to Dazed and Confused but Linklater only realised it when the script supervisor told him, “I love all the homoerotic stuff!”

Sounds like we might need to give it a watch…
