Explore gay love and history around the world with Oscar Wilde Tours
Oscar Wilde Tours is a company that offers tours focused on gay history and art.
It was founded three years ago by Dr. Andrew Lear, one of the foremost experts on same-sex love in the ancient world. Dr. Lear has taught in the Classics faculties of several prominent universities (Columbia, Pomona, NYU) and also has 20 years of experience designing and leading tours.
Oscar Wilde Tours offers gay history and art tours in Europe, such as ‘Greece, the homeland of same-sex love’ (May 20-29, 2016) and ‘Gay Italy, from Caesar to Michelangelo and Beyond’ (October 9-19, 2016).
Walking tours of New York are also a specialty, and in particular, tours of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Here, Dr. Lear gives his much-praised ‘Gay Secrets of the Metropolitan’ tour, covering LGBT themes in art, from ancient Greek statuary to Picasso’s Gertrude Stein.
This season he has introduced a second Met tour, ‘Shady Ladies of the Metropolitan’, covering the courtesans, royal mistresses, and other scandalous women who line the museum’s walls. Metropolitan Museum tours are offered throughout the year.
The next Gay Secrets Tour will be held at London’s National Portrait Gallery, 20-28 August, in collaboration with Attitude.
