A new survey has found that over 50 percent of gays aren’t out at work.

The survey of 806 gay men and women in the US was conducted as part of a poll on LGBT people in the workforce by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). Results showed that 53 per cent of US gays are closeted at work – a two percent increase since the same survey was conducted in 2009.

In its report on the results of the survey, HRC suggests that the rise could be linked to high levels of homophobic language in the workplace, with over 25 per cent of LGBT individuals saying they have heard anti-gay slurs while working.

Responding to the results, the director of the HRC Workplace Equality Program, Deena Fidas, said:

“It’s not enough to simply implement inclusive policies — those policies need to be augmented by training and accountability, and [leaders] need to be on the lookout for unconscious bias.”
