Gay and bi people are eight times more likely to be victims of revenge porn

Lesbian, gay and bisexual people are far more likely to have intimate photos and videos exposed than their straight counterparts, new research has found.

An American study has found that 17% of LGB people have been threatened with or have been victims of revenge porn, compared with just 2% of straight people.

Amanda Lenhart, a Researcher at Data & Society Research Institute, said: “Non-consensual pornography can have a devastating and lasting impact on victims, so it’s vital that we understand how common this is and who is affected.

“Our findings show that particular groups—such as young adults and lesbian, gay, and bisexual Americans—are not only much more likely to be victims of non-consensual pornography, but are more likely to experience a range of online harassment and abuse.

“This includes other types of privacy violations, such as having their online or phone activity monitored, or having their passwords stolen or coerced by others.”

This year has seen a string of male celebs become victims of revenge porn, with explicit videos of Sam Callahan, Ben Cohen, Joel Dommett and Shayne Ward all finding their way online.

In an open letter published last week and written from the perspective of his penis, Dommett warned: “This is a new type of crime and it’s not just happening to people of below average levels of fame like Joel”.
