Gay couple attacked in Paris while kissing on the street
The attack is the second homophobic assault to take place in Paris in less than a month.
A gay couple were allegedly attacked in Paris while kissing on the street.
According to reports, two homophobes assaulted the couple around 10 pm on October 6 as they kissed in Paris’ 19th arrondissement and fled after the attack.
A spokesperson for the police told French news site LCI that the couple were targeted because of their sexuality.
One of the perpetrators was placed into custody and will be tried for “willful violence committed on the basis of the sexual orientation of the victims and the carrying of a category D weapon.”
LCI reports that, despite CCTV footage, the second attacker was released due to a lack of evidence. Meanwhile, the two victims were treated at a local hospital for injuries to their ribs and nose.
The news comes after another gay couple were attacked in the city’s 20th arrondissement last month. The couple were reportedly beaten by unknown assailants after hugging on the street.
One of the men, comedian Arnaud Gagnoud, was hit with a motorcycle helmet and shared images of his injuries on Instagram.
Alongside the image, Gagnoud recalled the attack. He explained how he and his boyfriend had been hugging when three young people spotted them and began hurling homophobic insults, demanding that the couple leave “their neighbourhood”.
When the couple refused to leave, a fourth person joined the group before a scooter with two more people arrived. The group of six then began insulting, pushing and threatening the couple before the scooter driver removed his helmet and used it to hit Gagnoud twice.
Gagnoud wrote in the post that the group fled shortly after. He also revealed how he suffered facial trauma and needed seven stitches. Reports suggest that two men, who are brothers, were placed into custody.
