A gay couple on vacation were found dead this week after inhaling toxic levels of carbon monoxide.

Alex Ferrari and Luca Bortolaso from Italy were exposed to deadly fumes from a defective wood-burning brazier while they slept at a vacation home in Cà di Sotto, Verona on Tuesday (January 2).

The two 21-year-olds were sleeping in one room while their two female friends slept in another and used an electric fire to keep them warm.

Reports suggest the pair had been dating for over a year and were engaged.

According to Italian news site Cronaca, the couple’s family members requested their funerals to be held together.

Don Alessio Graziani, spokesman of the Bishop of Vicenza said: “The choice of celebrating the funeral of Alex and Luca together is a specific request from their families. The families, at this moment of immense sorrow, wish to be close with the words of faith.”

He added: “Following the death of two young people, every other comment is inappropriate.”

Their joint funeral was held yesterday (January 5).

The news comes after a gay couple died in a Glasgow hotel fire one week before Christmas.
