Gay man’s 71-year-old father demolishes Australian MP who compared gay people to paedophiles
By Will Stroude
The fight for LGBT equality in Australia has brought out some rather ugly views on homosexuality, with Liberal National MP George Christensen describing the recent move by Queensland to equalise the age of consent for anal sex as “legalising 50-year-old men being able to sleep with 16-year-old boys.”
According to The Independent, the MP added that it would lead to 16-year-olds being “preyed upon and groomed by much older men”.
The bigoted comments inevitably sparked outrage, and one gay man’s father, 71-year-old army veteran Peter Roberts, decided to pen a message to Christensen on the politician’s Facebook page via his wife’s Facebook account to teach him a thing or two about acceptance.
“A few… years ago you bought me a beer, as a 20-plus veteran with two tours of Vietnam. If you did it now I would tip the bloody thing over your head,” Roberts wrote.
“The typical homophobic, they must be paedophiles. So it is alright for old men like me to try and find a younger women but not a gay man? I have a GAY SON who I am so proud of what he has achieved in his life.”
He continued: “He should have the same rights as I have to marry, to adopt if he and his partner wants to, and not have clowns like you who live in the past helping to run this country and make decision for us and him.”
The post soon went viral, with Peter’s son, Dale, sharing the awesome letter to Twitter.
My dad is a Nats supporter in Dawson – last night he wrote this on George Christensen's page 👍👍👍 #marriageequality pic.twitter.com/IVsYNnG9Ni
