Gay Olympic stars Gus Kenworthy and Adam Rippon’s new friendship is everything

'We're here. We're queer. Get used to it'

Openly gay athletes Gus Kenworthy and Adam Rippon are making history as the first openly gay athletes on Team USA at the Winter Olympics. 

Over the weekend and during the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, the two athletes posed for a series of images shared on social media in defiance of anti-gay Vice President Mike Pence. 

The first snap was shared to Kenworthy’s Instagram and showed the two men embracing.

Alongside the image, Kenwrothy wrote a heartfelt caption: The #OpeningCeremony is a wrap and the 2018 Winter Olympic Gaymes are officially under way! I feel incredibly honored to be here in Korea competing for the US and I’m so proud to be representing the LGBTQ community alongside this amazing guy!”

Kenworthy then made sure to make a dig at Mike Pence, who – despite his anti-LGBT voting record – claimed last week his anti-gay reputation was “fake news”.

The freestyle skier joked: “Eat your heart out, Pence.” 

Soon after, the freeskier shared two more images from the opening ceremony with Rippon. The snaps showed the pair hugging and, and in another Kenworthy planted a big kiss on the fellow athlete’s cheek. 

“We’re here. We’re queer. Get used to it,” wrote the hunky sportsman. 

Rippon then retweeted the tweet and wrote: “I am 1000% here for this new and beautiful friendship.” 

 

Meanwhile, Rippon and Kenworthy aren’t the only LGBT+ stars making waves at this year’s Winter Olympics. 

Canadian figure skater Eric Radford made history as the first openly gay male athlete to win gold at the team figure skating event. 

Adam Rippon scored bronze at the same event, and Kenworthy celebrated the win with another snap of the pair cuddling. 

He wrote: “V proud of this guy.”
