A well-known gay Chief Inspector in the London Metropolitan Police has been arrested on suspicion of dealing drugs.

According to the Daily Mail, Paul Cahill was taken into custody last Monday (December 1) when he was found in possession of Class A substances.

A spokesperson for the London Metropolitan Police said: “We can confirm a Chief Inspector from Territorial Policing was arrested in Wandsworth Road on Monday, 1 December on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a substance thought to be class A drugs.

“He was also arrested on a drink drive related offence. A breath test was not administered. The officer has been suspended.”

Cahill joined the police force in the 1990s and became a high profile campaigner for gay rights, resulting in him being awarded an MBE for his services to diversity in 2003.

Some of his most notable work came after the Soho nail bombing in 1999, when he encouraged gay police officers to work closely with bars and clubs in the area.

Cahill has reportedly been bailed pending further investigation.
