A Welsh miners’ support group will reunite with gay right campaigners on March 14th to mark the 30th anniversary of the end of the 1984-1985 strike.
The alliance formed between the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) group and miners in Dulais valley in South Wales inspired the BAFTA Award-winning film Pride.
The Neath, Dulais and Swansea Valley Miners’ Support Group has now reformed and will host the reunion to mark the end of the year-long strike.
Sian James, Swansea East MP, has taken up the role of secretary in the group, which she credits being part of for kickstarting her political career.
“This event, which will commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1984-85 miners’ strike and bring together all those who supported the Neath, Dulais and Swansea Valley Miners’ Support Group,” she said.
“The evening will be an opportunity to bring together those who supported us during the strike of 1984/1985 and celebrate the solidarity and achievements of the support group during this period of our local history.”
Proceeds of a musical evening will go to the Mark Ashton Red Ribbon Fund, which is part of the Terrence Higgins Trust.
Pride> actor Bronwen Lewis and Dulais Valley Divas choir will be among those performing at the celebration, for which tickets are now on sale.
