GoFundMe shuts down fundraising page for anti-gay bakery

GoFundMe has shut down a fundraising page for an anti-gay bakery that was fined after it refused to bake a cake for a gay couple.

Following a long court battle, a judge ruled last week that the owners of ‘Sweet Cakes by Melissa’ in Oregon were to be fined $135,000 after they refused to bake a cake for a gay couple on the grounds of their religious beliefs.

In order to raise cash for the fine, Aaron and Melissa Klein set up a fundraising page on GoFundMe which managed to hit almost $109,000 before being swiftly closed down by the website, who said that the page broke their terms and conditions.

“After careful review by our team, we have found the ‘Support Sweet Cakes By Melissa’ campaign to be in violation of our Terms and Conditions. The money raised thus far will still be made available for withdrawal. While a different campaign was recently permitted for a pizzeria in Indiana, no laws were violated and the campaign remained live.

However, the subjects of the “Support Sweet Cakes By Melissa” campaign have been formally charged by local authorities and found to be in violation of Oregon state law concerning discriminatory acts. Accordingly, the campaign has been disabled.”

The couple didn’t take the website’s actions lightly however, claiming in a Facebook post that “Satan’s really at work” and adding that “God’s plan will win in the end”.
