Government launches ‘Stop Online Abuse’ website to help victims of social media abuse

By Ryan Love

The government has launched a new anti-trolling website, which has been designed to help victims on bullying and abuse on social media.

The Stop Online Abuse website offers guidance and legal advice to those being targeted, with a particular focus on women and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

The website was developed after research from Stonewall found that 23% of LGBT pupils experienced cyberbullying, with 5% of LGBT adults having been the target of homophobic abuse or behaviour online in the last 12 months.

Nicky Morgan, the minister for women and equalities explained: “This new site will provide practical advice for women and LGBT people on how to recognise abuse, what steps to take to report it and how to get offensive content removed.

“It is another sign of our determination to tackle discrimination in all its forms and create a fairer society for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.”

Nik Noone, the chief executive of LGBT anti-hate crime charity Galop, said that the project is about “ensuring that protection from harassment and abuse against women and LGBT people in the real world exists in the online world too.”
