Governor of Texas compares homosexuality to alcoholism
By Josh Haggis
Rick Perry, the Republican Governor of Texas, has apparently compared homosexuality to alcoholism.
Last weekend, Perry made the decision to publicly endorse so-called “reparative therapy” for gay people, a process that purports to be able to change a person’s sexual orientation, which has been dismissed by the lion’s share of the medical profession.
Speaking to an audience at the Commonwealth Club of California earlier today (June 12), the 64-year-old was asked whether he considers homosexuality to be a disorder, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.
“Whether or not you feel compelled to follow a particular lifestyle or not, you have the ability to decide not to do that,” Perry replied.
“I may have the genetic coding that I’m inclined to be an alcoholic, but I have the desire not to do that, and I look at the homosexual issue the same way.”
In response to a question from the audience, Perry also admitted that he is unsure whether “reparative therapy” works.
