Hilary Swank: 'We have a long way to go until the trans community is accepted'

Hilary Swank has argued that there is a still “a long way to go” until the transgender community is fully accepted.

The actress made the remark while discussing her Oscar-winning role in 1999 drama Boys Don’t Cry, which told the true story of trans man Brandon Teena, who was raped and murdered by his friends after they discovered that he was transgender.

“Let people love people and let’s focus on what truly needs looked at and help homeless people, homeless pets, sick people,” said the actress during an appearance on the Meredith Vieira Show this week. “Look at the rest of the world, let’s focus on those things.”

She continued: “I think we have taken strides since that movie. We have a long way to go.”

“It’s astonishing to me that we are here in 2015 and there are so many issues that need to be looked at and handled and we shouldn’t dictate who people should love,” she added.
