Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign makes appeal to same-sex parents

By Samuel McManus

Although her State Department emails may have got her into a spot of bother last year, Hillary Clinton is now showing support to same-sex parents, running a letter from a gay dad expressing his fear of what a Republican president could mean for his family on her website.

According to Advocate.com, the letter – signed by fathers Kevin and Robbin, and their son Grey – was posted to the Clinton campaign website on Wednesday, alongside a fundraising appeal.

Clinton received unfavourable response from LGBT families in 2015 when, during a State Department emails leak, she was found to have opposed changing travel documents to be inclusive of same-sex parents. The emails read: “Who made the decision that State will not use the terms ‘mother and father’ and instead substitute ‘parent one and two’? I’m not defending that decision, which I disagree w and knew nothing about, in front of this Congress. I could live w letting people in nontraditional families choose another descriptor so long as we retained the presumption of mother and father. We need to address this today or we will be facing a huge Fox-generated media storm led by Palin et al.”

However, it seems that Clinton now has the support of same-sex families again, with Kevin writing in the touching letter: “I want you to know that I support you because you have supported me in some of the most delicate and pivotal moments in my life…I remember that day in December of 2011, watching you with tears in my eyes as you said, ‘Gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights.'”

The father of seven-week-old Grey also shared his fears for if the Obergefell decision that sent marriage equality throughout America was to be overturned.

“I’m frankly scared of Grey turning on the TV and seeing a Republican president who is outspoken about his belief that gay couples shouldn’t be allowed to marry, or that gay parents are not adequate to provide all the opportunities that a heterosexual couple can provide. I am scared of what a Republic president will mean for my family.”

The full letter can be read on the Hillary Clinton campaign website.
