Holly Johnson: ‘Pride has lost its way’
By Sam Rigby
Holly Johnson has spoken about the role of Pride in today’s LGBT community.
The Frankie Goes to Hollywood singer argued that Pride has “lost its way” over the years, and now has less of a “political edge”.
Speaking to attitude.co.uk at the World Pride Power List event in London last night (June 27), Johnson said: “I think it’s lost some of its political edge actually. I think the London event could be improved.
“I always think of Pride as being brilliant in the regions like Brighton and Manchester. Even Liverpool has got a Pride now, which I’m really happy about.”
He then added: “Since the old days when it was the Pride Trust [running the event in London], it’s kind of lost its way, though. I’m hoping that they will get it together. For example, they didn’t invite me to perform so they must be out of touch, completely out of touch!”
The singer is preparing to release his new album Europa on September 29. The record will be preceded by his new single Follow Your Heart, which is available on iTunes now.
“I think it’s the best album I’ve made since Blast,” Johnson said, comparing the record to his 1989 chart-topper.
