Australian actor Hugh Sheridan has come out as non-binary in an Instagram post to celebrate Pride month, while also paying tribute to fiance Kurt Roberts.
On Saturday (26 June 2021) the Back to the Rafters star posted the cover of the new issue of Australian magazine DNA on which he’s seen embracing Kurt – a model who’s previously appeared on the cover solo.
In his editor’s letter announcing the feature, DNA’s Andrew Creagh refers to Hugh with he/him pronouns.
“I don’t accept a label cause it limits me”
In a caption, Sheridan wrote: “I AM still a human (non binary/bi/me/Hughman) but I’m in a monogamous relationship with another human, who I love.
“I don’t accept a label cause it limits me… if you want it; take it. I chose zero labels for no other reason except the exclusion, limitations, separation, I believe are all one, deeeeep down. &…who knows? Why chose?!!
“Be you. Be true. Be free: to BE, to JUST BE… you, a human, same as me.”

Congrats to Hugh!
Speaking to DNA, Hugh said of his relationship [as per the Daily Mail]: “Now I’m marrying a guy you can call me gay. Whatever! The point is, we’re all human and, in my case, labelling put me into a box that felt like a cell.”
Last October, the Aussie said he’d slept with men and women but wanted to avoid labels, writing in an essay for Stellar magazine: “By sharing my story now and becoming more transparent, maybe I can help to give others who are private a break. We might live and let them live as they wish. I believe labels are for clothes, not for people.”
After, Sheridan said he was “overwhelmed” with the support he received from fans.
The actor had been due to play the titular role in the rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch earlier this year, but the producers called the show off after a backlash at Sheridan’s casting.
Speaking to Sam Armytage’s Something to Talk About podcast in February, Hugh said he was “sad and lost” when he lost the role.
