Irish photographer highlights the hypocrisy of ‘No’ voters

By Will Stroude

An Irish photographer is on a one-man mission to highlight the absurdity of people campaigning for a ‘No’ vote in next week’s referendum on marriage equality.

Conor Phelan has photographed a series of gay couples alongside quotes made by ‘No’ campaigners including Catholic advocacy group the Iona Institute to highlight the hypocrisy of their arguments against equality. Funnily enough, the quotes and pictures fit together perfectly. Take a look at some the work published on his Facebook page below:

Coner wrote on Facebook: “With the upcoming election on Marriage Equality, I took some photos with same-sex couples alongside some quotes from the people campaigning to vote NO to show the ridiculousness of their arguments against voting YES.”

Adding that all the couples featured were people “very much in love”, he explained he wanted to highlight the “absolute hypocrisy” of anti-equality campaigners.

The Iona Institute released a rage-inducing new video to drum up support for the ‘No’ vote earlier this week, in which they misleadingly claimed that instead of bringing about equality, a ‘Yes’ vote would in fact create inequality – for children.

Meanwhile, Bono has become the latest high-profile celebrity to back the ‘Yes’ campaign ahead of the vote later this month, which will mark the world’s first national referendum on the issue.
