Israeli government airlifting 52 gay couples from Nepal earthquake
By Josh Haggis
The Israeli government is helping to evacuate gay couples and their children from Nepal following the country’s devastating earthquake.
A group of Israeli-born same-sex couples and their newborn children are being airlifted to safety after they were caught in the midst of the country’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake which has so far killed over 4,500 people and left thousands unaccounted for.
The 52 gay couples had travelled to Nepal in order to access a commercial surrogacy service, which is currently outlawed for same-sex couples in Israel.
Although DNA testing is normally required before newborn children enter Israel, the country’s Interior Minister has announced that this rule will be waived for the gay couples and their newborn children currently stuck in the country in order to get them home safely and unharmed as quickly as possible.
