The mayor of Italian town Borgosesia wants to ban gay couples kissing in public.

Gianluca Buonanno claimed that public displays of affection between same-sex couples are “morally harmful for children”.

Speaking to Italian newspaper La Repubblica (via The Huffington Post), he said: “Kissing in public between homosexuals? No thanks.

“I don’t like two people of the same sex making public displays of affection. It’s a question of respect. And I’m convinced that it’s also morally harmful for children.”

Buonanno’s proposed legislation would see gay couples fined up to €500 for kissing in public, but it is unclear if the ban will be passed.

The mayor has also claimed that he intends to put a picture of Russian President Vladimir Putin up in his office.
