Jeremy Clarkson has apologised for tweeting a picture of himself next to a sheet of paper bearing the words “gay c*nt”.

The Top Gear presenter shared the photo, in which he is seen sleeping next to the expletive-laden sign, on Twitter last night (January 16) with the caption: “Sadly, I fell asleep on the plane.”

After receiving complaints from Twitter followers, who objected to the sign’s implied use of the word “gay” as an insult, he removed it from his feed.

Clarkson’s most recent post on the social networking site reads: “I have deleted my last tweet and would like to apologise profusely to anyone who I upset while I was asleep.”
