JK Rowling says ‘hundreds’ of trans activists have threatened to ‘beat, rape, assassinate and bomb’ her

JK Rowling says that “hundreds” of transgender activists have threatened her with violence online. 

The Harry Potter author, who sometimes published under her pen name Robert Galbraith, has become known in recent years for her views on sex and gender, which has alienated many fans of her work.

Last year, the writer published an anti-trans essay where she cited concerns about single-sex spaces such as bathrooms and changing rooms and that she has “deep concerns about the effect the trans rights movement” 

“There’s really only one place to go”

The writer received a tweet on Sunday (18 July) in response to her saying, “we will win” regarding people supporting her and her views.

Someone with the Twitter name @queerqegaard quoted Rowling’s response, adding, “I wish you a very nice pipebomb in [sic] mailbox”

The author then quoted this saying, “To be fair, when you can’t get a woman sacked, arrested or dropped by her publisher, and cancelling her only made her book sales go up, there’s really only one place to go.”

She also added, “Yes, but now hundreds of trans activists have threatened to beat, rape, assassinate and bomb me I’ve realised that this movement poses no risk to women whatsoever,” before saying she was going back to her writing.

“Trans people are who they say they are”

In 2020 JK Rowling mocked “men who menstruate” and also wrote the aforementioned essay, where she said she refused to “bow down to a movement that I believe is doing demonstrable harm in seeking to erode ‘woman’ as a political and biological class and offering cover to predators like few before it.”

She’s also previously supported Maya Forstater, who recently won an appeal against an employment tribunal over tweets expressing gender-critical views. 

A number of stars have come out in support and against Rowling for her views. Harry Potter actress, Emma Watson who came to fame playing Hermione Granger in the wizarding series is among those to criticise Rowling, saying, “trans people are who they say they are”. 

However, actors such as Brian Cox have defended Rowling’s views on people who menstruate as calling it “what it is”.
