John Whaite: ‘I am honoured to write for ‘Attitude’
By Sam Rigby
John Whaite has explained what he thinks is the secret of Attitude‘s success.
The attitude.co.uk columnist said he is “honoured” to have the opportunity to write for us, adding that he hopes to continue contributing until he is an “old man”.
Speaking to Attitude at our 20th birthday party on Saturday (March 29), he said: “Attitude has lasted so long because it’s not exploitative and it embraces our culture and sexuality. It does so in a humble, English way. Obviously there are naked men on the front cover, but it’s not in your face like other gay magazines are.
“It’s evolutionary and it constantly updates with the times. I am honoured to write for Attitude and I hope I continue to until I’m an old man,” he added.
Whaite said that the reaction to his Love & Marriage cover has been “great”, although his family were “a bit shocked”.
He explained: “My stepdad sort of said ‘I didn’t expect you to be kissing’. I think he’s come to terms with it now and realised that that’s what it’s all about.”
The Great British Bake Off winner has just released his new book John Whaite Bakes: Recipes for Every Day and Every Mood, which he hopes Mary Berry will give her seal of approval.
“I’ll hunt her down!” he joked.
Whaite also hinted that we may be seeing more of him in the near future as part of his own TV series, saying coyly: “There’s a few things [in the works], but I can’t say too much at the moment.”
He also gave his advice to those thinking of applying for The Great British Bake Off, urging them to “enjoy the process” and “just go for it”.
Attitude‘s 20th birthday party took place on Saturday night (March 29) at The Grosvenor House Hotel in central London and featured exclusive performances from The Overtones and Holly Johnson, plus a DJ set from our first ever cover star, Boy George. Find out more about the night here.
