Professional footballer Josh Cavallo has opened up in an interview about the significance of the date he chose to come out publicly as gay (27 October) and about the time leading up to his announcement.
The 21-year-old who plays for Adelaide United came out in a video post and statement at the end of October, making him the only out professional footballer in the world.
He said at the time he’d found it difficult growing up and leading a double life, but was ready to show the world his true, authentic self.
“I wanted to help or save someone’s life”
Speaking to the Herald Sun, the midfielder revealed 27 October relates to him playing as number 27, plus his parents’ wedding anniversary and the date of the death of his grandfather.
Discussing with the publication the time leading up to his coming out, Josh shared his worries about locker room talk.
“Before it was like… when I’m playing games or training, I’m worried about the conversation in the change rooms afterwards,” he said. “It’s very confusing and it’s draining, it’s tiring.”
But a talk with the English former player Thomas Beattie, who came out after he retired, helped Cavallo make his decision.
“I wanted to help or save someone’s life,” he said. “I am sure there are footballers who are terrified of coming out if the reaction is negative.”
Cavallo also revealed he only came out to the coaching staff and his teammates at Adelaide within the last couple of months to a positive response.
