Kellie Maloney: ‘Same-sex couples shouldn’t raise children’
By Josh Haggis
Kellie Maloney has said she believes same-sex couples shouldn’t raise children.
The legendary boxing manager and promoter, 61, formerly known as Frank Maloney, came out as transgender last week – read more here.
In the 2010 General Election, Maloney stood as a UKIP candidate in the East London constituency of Barking. She has been criticised several times in the past for making remarks perceived to be against the LGBT community, and opposed same-sex marriage during the 2010 General Election.
In a new interview, Maloney has insisted that comments she made in the past about LGBT people were just “off-the-cuff remarks” – but admitted that she doesn’t believe that children should be raised in same-sex marriages.
“Look, I was caught off guard. These were just silly, off-the-cuff remarks. I’m not homophobic,” Maloney told The Telegraph. “I have gay friends. And my recent experiences have left me wiser and more tolerant. I’ve learnt a lot.”
She continued: “All I will say is that going through the transgender experience doesn’t mean suddenly I have the same opinions on everything as everyone in the LGBT community. I still don’t think that children should be brought up in same-sex marriages.”
Maloney publicly retired from boxing late last year. She split from her second wife in 2012 and has three daughters, two from her first marriage and one from her second.
Meanwhile, boxing legend Lennox Lewis recently spoke out in support of Maloney, his former manager – read what he had to say here.
