Laurie considers Russian vodka boycott over anti-gay laws
By Sam Rigby
Hugh Laurie has spoken out against Russia’s anti-gay laws.
The House actor contemplated a boycott of Russian vodka on Twitter, but later retracted his comments in favour of urging the Russian people to “stand up” to politicians.
After complaining about Putin’s latest anti-gay remarks, Laurie posted: “I’d boycott Russian goods if I could think of a single thing they made besides the rest of the world depressed.”
His followers then pointed out that the country makes big business out of vodka.
He replied: “Yes, alright, Russian vodka is OK if you need to clean the oven. For drinking, it must henceforth be Polish.”
Taking back his earlier comments, he later posted: “I urge good, kind Russians to stand up to the slab-faced goons who deal in this kind of poison.”
Laurie is the latest star to hit out at Russia’s anti-gay laws, which ban the promotion of “non-traditional” relationships to minors.
Star Trek‘s Chris Pine recently described the laws as “extraordinary and awful”.
