LCD Soundsystem’s Gavin Russom comes out as transgender

Gavin Russom, a member of the rock band LCD Soundsystem, has come out as a transgender woman.
She came out publically during an interview with Pitchfork, in which she discussed her gender identity and her continuing journey.
Opening up about her decision to come out, Gavin said: “Over the last year and a half, I went from my trans identity being something I was in touch with and worked through in one way or another, to suddenly this shift where it’s on the front burner. Now it’s time to become a whole person.”
Gavin reveals that she took time off from touring and recording with the band last year in order to focus on self-care. During that time, she was supported by a “large and diverse community of trans women” in New York City.
Unveiling a new image of herself, Gavin said: “A new photo that reflects how I feel comfortable expressing myself.”
Russom will use female pronouns and says she will continue to go by her “old name”, Gavin.
Gavin told Grindr’s Into that her public coming out has been a long road: “This is my fifth decade being alive, and in each of those decades, there’s been a time where I’ve tried to say, ‘Hey, I think I’m transgender!’ This was even before that word existed.”
Her first DJ set as an out trans woman will be at the Pitchfork Music Festival. She will perform at Femme’s Room, a party that celebrates femme and queer identities. She was actually booked to perform at the party before anyone knew that she is trans.
“Having not said anything about my gender identity or transition, it felt like this amazing synchronicity,” she said, “one of those moments where the universe is tapping you on the shoulder, [saying], ‘It’s OK, it’s real.’”
