Leelah Alcorn’s best friend has revealed that the transgender teen’s parents kept her from attending their daughter’s funeral.

Abby Jones, 17, alleges that Leelah’s mother, Carla Alcorn, banned her from attending the funeral on January 2 because she blames her for posting a photo of her daughter in a dress on social media, which has become synonymous with Leelah’s tragic story.

“Her mum called and blamed her for everything that got posted online even though Leelah’s page was public,” Abbey’s mother told The Daily Mail. “My daughter just wanted to say goodbye to her best friend. They did not allow her to go to the funeral.”

“It was obvious after the call – Carla had no right to call and harass my daughter,” she added.

‘It Gets Better’ founder Dan Savage has reacted to the story, saying that Leelah’s “criminally reckless” parents should face criminal charges over their daughter’s death – find out more here.

Meanwhile, in her latest column Attitude’s Paris Lees argues that the best way to honour the 17-year-old’s memory is to get ‘conversion’ therapy banned for good – read it here.
