Lilly Wachowski wins at GLAAD Awards and makes first public appearance
Lilly Wachowski makes her first public appearance at the GLAAD Media Awards last night (Saturday).
Winning a GLAAD Award for best drama series for Sense8, Lilly took to the stage to speak about her coming out.
She thanked the “fabulous people at GLAAD”.
Wachowski came out as transgender last month in a statement to Chicago’s Windy City Times. In the statement, Wachowski explains how she felt pressured by media outlets into coming out and was even approached by a reporter from the Daily Mail. Lilly’s sister, Lana, came out as transgender in 2012.
She jokingly said on stage that “My sister likes to joke, you can’t write this sh*t. Where do we find the courage to break free of the boxes of our lives, to transcend and overcome tragedy? The monsters within and the violence we do to ourselves when we are too afraid to be who we really are.”
Her speech continued, “And while the ideas of identity and transformation are components of our work, the bedrock that all ideas rest upon is love. Love is a crucial thing for transgender people, it’s a tether.”
She thanked her sister for the win, her parents who attended the awards show as well as Netflix and the cast and crew. And then ended the speech by telling everyone to “get out there and go love with all your f*cking might!”
