Liza Minnelli’s rendition of ‘Over The Rainbow’ appears online
By Ben Kelly
An audio clip of a 13-year-old Liza Minnelli singing Over The Rainbow has surfaced online.
The recording, from a 1960 broadcast of Hedda Hopper’s Hollywood, is the only time Minnelli has ever been heard performing the famous Wizard Of Oz song, which was the signature tune of her mother, Judy Garland.
In a 2001 appearance on Rosie O’Donnell’s US chat show, Minnelli said she had promised her mother she would never sing the song, out of respect.
But this archive performance captures Minnelli singing the song nearly ten years before her mother’s death; and she sounds remarkably like her.
